'I was under surveillance. I felt I was under a microscope...It's an atmosphere of terror.'

The huge changes in Bedouin society have had mixed outcomes for women. On one hand, the proximity and increased access to higher education has opened up new opportunities. However, this has resulted in many women's relatives employing stricter methods of supervision to ensure the women's 'honour' is preserved. For many young women this constant surveillance restricts their wider university experience and also provokes a great deal of anxiety. Many are constantly fearful that their public visibility and everyday interactions on campus will be interpreted as permissiveness and reported to their families. However, despite their strong desire to experience personal freedoms, Bedouin women reported continuing to uphold their religious and cultural values, even when away from the watchful eyes of their family.

The dark background suggests hidden figures, claustrophobia and fear. The view through binoculars and crosshair symbols overlap with elements of Bedouin wedding jewellery, suggesting the anxiety of female students' families.
